About GBM's Partnership with the Lambi Fund of Haiti

GBM is partnering with the Lambi Fund of Haiti to help expand grassroots reforestation and community development programs in Haiti. The Lambi Fund works hand in hand with local grassroots organizations to help build a sustainable and economically viable future in Haiti.

In an agricultural economy such as Haiti, deforestation has a critical impact on food security. Deforestation in Haiti – described by one recent UN report as “one of the most degraded countries in the world” – threatens its farmland. The highly publicized floods from Hurricane Jeanne in 2004 that destroyed a key agricultural region were a result of soil erosion and deforestation. The devastating earthquake on January 12, 2010 has left even higher demands on agriculture and local food production.

Through peer to peer exchanges, indigenous wisdom, and joint collaborations from women leaders in the Green Belt Movement, communities supported by the Lambi Fund are learning how to address their most urgent needs while expanding their reforestation program. These efforts will have a lasting impact in the sustainable rebuilding of Haiti in the aftermath of the January 12th earthquake.

Program Objectives
  • Plant 1 million trees in Haiti
  • Training and technical assistance by GBM and Lambi Fund agronomists
  • Peer led exchange and solidarity between Kenya and Haiti to share best practices, including recognition and awareness of advocacy
  • "Train the Trainer” workshops for grassroots leaders in Haiti
  • Pilot demonstrations and scale-up of grassroots reforestation program
  • Regional conferences and public education to strengthen reforestation movement building
  • Documentation and evaluation of project

The partnership began in 2007 when a delegation of Kenyan women leaders in GBM visited the Lambi Fund in Haiti to start the peer exchange. GBM looks forward to hosting a group of women from Haiti in the near future and advancing this long-term partnership and mutual exchange program to inspire tree-planting and sustainable development in Haiti.
