December 15, 2009
Copenhagen, December 15, 2009
Speaking at the opening ceremony of the High-Level Segment of the Copenhagen Climate Conference, Professor Wangari Maathai will urge world leaders to adopt a fair, ambitious, and legally binding agreement in Copenhagen that puts protection of the world’s forest ecosystems at its centre. “Forests can live without us, but we can’t live without them,” she will say.
Professor Maathai, who joins Prince Charles and other world leaders at the event at the Bella Center at the COP 15 climate summit, will earlier be honored by the United Nations' Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon at her designation as the 12th UN Messenger of Peace with a special focus on the environment and climate change.
The Messenger of Peace designation ceremony takes place at 3 p.m. at the Bella Center. The opening ceremony begins at 5 p.m., also at the Bella Center.
